The Hunts Point Alliance for Children is proud to partner with Bank Street Summer Camp to sponsor local youth each year as both campers and to provide first job opportunities. Scholarships are awarded to students enrolled in the Shakespeare program as an opportunity to extend their participation with HPAC throughout the summer.
During the summer of 2010, twenty-five students from Hunts Point attended the Bank Street Summer Camp. Campers participated in Shakespeare Theater, Musical Theater, Sports, Science, Film, Travel, or Art Camp, while 9 neighborhood teens were employed through the partnership as Leaders in Training.
In 2010, HPAC selected 9 youths as Leaders in Training to learn job skills while interacting with campers from all over the world, and of varying ages. Part of their leaders training included basic CPR and first aid training, job skill workshops, and learning how to work with children. The leaders included 6 Counselors-In-Training and 3 Junior Counselors.
As part of their summer camp experience, the campers attended an overnight trip at Club Getaway in Connecticut; for some, it was their first experience at a sleep away camp. Other trips within their camp programs included Hershey and Philadelphia, Vermont, a Staten Island Yankees game, and a trip to see Wicked! on Broadway. In addition, all children had swim instruction twice a week.
Through Bank Street children from the 10474 zip code are enriched with novel and exciting experiences and make lasting, wholesome memories amongst a diverse crowd of children from all over the world.
