In September 2008, Heather Mills announced the unprecedented gift of $1 million dollars worth of food to the residents of the Hunts Point to be administered by HPAC.
The donation mobilized HPAC in many ways. Most significantly, it enabled the alliance to reach out to families and through the efforts of HPAC and alliance members to distribute healthy food and increase nutrition education, the absence of which constitutes a barrier to learning and healthy development. The donation also served as a vehicle for community organizing and allowed HPAC to strengthen current partnerships in the neighborhood and develop new ones with community groups. Fresh produce and vegan meatless products are distributed directly to community families and through community events held by alliance members throughout the year.
Heather Mills has continued to be active in her dedication to Hunts Point. In January 2009, she hosted “Cooking Healthy with Heather” at the JVL Wildcat Academy. Heather demonstrated healthy cooking tips with neighborhood student chefs for neighborhood families. All were then invited to a full meal prepared by the Wildcat Apprentice Chefs.
